Need a quick getaway? Here’s why Ray Roberts Lake State Park is the perfect weekend trip for locals

If you live in Northlake, Justin, Argyle, or Roanoke, you’re sitting just 30–45 minutes from one of North Texas’s best-kept secrets: Ray Roberts Lake State Park. Whether you’re looking to unplug, soak in some sun, or simply do something different with your weekend, this nearby gem offers a little something for everyone—and you don’t even have to book a hotel.

A Nature Escape Without the Long Drive

Located just north of Denton, Ray Roberts Lake State Park feels a world away from the traffic and to-do lists, but it’s close enough to head out after work on a Friday and still catch a sunset over the lake. It’s ideal for a spontaneous weekend adventure or a planned family outing that doesn’t require hours of prep.

Activities for All Interests

  • Hiking & Biking: The park is home to more than 20 miles of trails, including the scenic Greenbelt Corridor Trail that connects to Lake Lewisville. Great for joggers, hikers, or cyclists.
  • Fishing & Boating: Cast a line from the shore or rent a kayak and paddle out. The lake is well-stocked with bass, catfish, and crappie. There’s even a fishing pier!
  • Camping: Choose from developed campsites with water/electricity or opt for something more low-tech. Not a fan of tents? The Lone Star Lodge inside the park offers comfy cabin-style lodging with lake views.
  • Beach Time: Yes, there’s a beach! The Isle du Bois Unit and Johnson Unit both have sandy swimming areas perfect for families, complete with shaded picnic tables nearby.
  • Wildlife & Bird Watching: Keep an eye out for deer, armadillos, and dozens of native bird species. Early morning walks are especially rewarding.

Bring Snacks—or Make It a Feast

Pack a picnic, grill burgers lakeside, or pick up food from nearby Sanger or Pilot Point before entering the park. With shaded pavilions and lakeside tables, it’s easy to make a meal part of the adventure.

Perfect for All Ages

From toddlers with sand buckets to teens who want to paddleboard to grandparents looking for a peaceful stroll, the park is truly multi-generational. It’s also dog-friendly—just bring a leash and plenty of water.

The Kids Will Love It

The Johnson Unit has a kid-friendly fishing pond. And the Johnson Unit and Isle du Bois Unit both have fantastic nature centers that the kids will love. Rangers lead nature hikes and programs at different times. You can get a free Junior Ranger Journal for the kids, or borrow a Junior Ranger Explore Pack, which includes a pair of binoculars and a magnifying glass; an animal tracking key and guides to flowers, birds, butterflies, trees, rocks, wildflowers and plants; and pencil, crayons and watercolors along with a journal and sketchbook.

Budget-Friendly Fun

Entry is just $7 per adult, and kids 12 and under are free. Camping spots can be reserved for under $30 a night. Compared to a full-on vacation, it’s an affordable way to recharge without draining your wallet or PTO.

So Why Go?
Because sometimes, you just need to sit under a tree, listen to the birds, and not think about emails. Ray Roberts Lake is a stress-free reset close to home, and if you live in southern Denton County, you really have no excuse not to try it.

Grab your cooler, lace up your walking shoes, and make the most of your weekend. Nature is calling… and it’s just up the road.
